Harvest is on. We picked Friday and Saturday. The yields were way off, even in the young vines, mostly due to dehydration. So far, with over half of the vineyard harvested, the yields are 60% lower than last year. Never the less, I am elated to be harvesting any grapes after such a weird summer.

Given the current economic climate, making less wine seems like a good idea anyway. However most of the income for the vineyard comes from selling grapes to Ravenswood winery. Old Hill grapes are their most precious Zin grapes and they pay a pretty penny for them. So it appears I won’t be buying any new vineyard toys this coming year.

The grapes we did harvest were delicious and very sweet. They taste like melon and the acidity seems higher than I remember in years past. I think we might make some good wine this year….

Well, I remember a saying from “way back when” that went something like: “Good things come in small packages.” So…maybe your “package” of grapes is smaller than you’d hoped, but what you’ll make of it will be extra-good!!
